Postdoctoral Researcher: Theory of Carrier Transport and Recombination Processes in Boron Containing Semiconductor Alloys and Heterostructures for Optoelectronic Devices
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term - 1 years

The III-N Materials and Devices, and Photonics Theory Groups at Tyndall National Institute have attracted major funding to understand and develop semiconductor optoelectronic devices using III-nitride semiconductors with boron containing alloys.  This work requires detailed theoretical and experimental understanding of the fundamental properties of the material and their consequences for optoelectronic devices.

As part of this award, Tyndall and University College Cork are inviting now applications for a researcher focusing on the theory of carrier transport and recombination in boron III-N alloys and heterostructures. The researcher shall develop multi-scale carrier transport and recombination models. Here, emphasis is on combining semi-empirical electronic structure approaches (e.g. localization landscape theory) and drift-diffusion-based models. The theoretical studies will go hand in hand with the experimental investigations carried out in the project to ensure its overall success. Both research groups are well-established with significant teams, and who interact with others as part of a vibrant multi-investigator activity covering infrared to ultraviolet optoelectronic devices.

Key Responsibilities and research objectives
  • Develop a multi-scale simulation framework for studying carrier transport and recombination processes in boron containing nitride alloys and heterostructures.
  • Employ the developed model to understand carrier transport and recombination in boron containing nitride devices.
  • Collaborate closely with the experimental partners on the project to ensure overall success.
  • Disseminate the outcomes of the research to a range of audiences, including internal presentations and reports to the group and Tyndall internal events, and externally through high profile peer‐reviewed academic publications and at conferences of international standing.
  • Technical support and supervision of other group members, including PhD students.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of the research and of the group more generally.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational Quality Management Systems, Health and Safety standards, and other regulations.
  • Support education and public engagement activities.
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria
  • The successful candidate should have or will soon be awarded a PhD in physical sciences, applied maths, electrical engineering, or a related field or have demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • Previous research in electronic structure theory and carrier transport models for semiconductor heterostructures, as evidenced by publications.
  • Strong communications, interpersonal and team working skills.
  • Excellent technical report writing skills.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in semi-empirical electronic structure models such as tight-binding, k.p, localization theory or transport simulations (drift-diffusion).
  • Previous research in III-N materials as evidenced by publications.
  • Experience in working in research projects including multiple academic (both experiment and theory) and industry partners.
Tyndall National institute has a proactive entrepreneurial culture and we welcome applications from candidates who possess entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including the creation of technology start-ups.

Appointment may be made on the IUA Scale for Postdoc Researcher €45,847 - €52,339 pa.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.

Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Dr. Stefan Schulz.
Closing date of applications is 1pm of 25th July 2025
