Commercial Lead for a Biosensor Solution for Selected Veterinary Applications
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term (9 Months)

Background
Established in 1982, the Tyndall National Institute (formerly NMRC) is one of Europe’s leading centres in deep tech ICT research and development. It hosts over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff and has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall National Institute is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in life sciences including medtech, biopharma and agritech. Tyndall’s ICT for Health Strategic Programmes are driving an ABC ecosystem (i.e. combining Academic, Business and Clinical stakeholders, together with Design thinking), in which Tyndall researchers are working with academic leaders (national and international), many leading companies in the medtech and pharma industries, and in collaboration with clinical scientists.  This ensures that research outputs from Tyndall combine excellence with impact in terms of clinical utility and commercial opportunity.

Purpose of the Role
Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork invites applications for a position as a Commercialisation Lead for a recently funded project. The project will involve the development of a novel wearable electrochemical sensor solution for selected veterinary applications in the Life Sciences Interface Group. You will join a team in the Life Sciences Interface Group, with the explicit aim of commercialising a novel electrochemical sensor solution, through a new start-up company to be launched in  2027. Our primary objective is to bring this new exciting technology to market in selected veterinary applications, and to achieve this through the formation of a Tyndall spin-out company. We anticipate that the successful individual will play a leading role in the company, once it is formed.

An essential element of this role will be to engage with potential end-users, customers and Key Opinion Leaders related to this new sensor solution technology, and to gain an understanding of how the system could address their unmet needs. Based on this information and together with an analysis of the relevant regulatory, standards and reimbursement requirements applicable, a key task will be to establish a clear User Requirements Specification (URS). This will inform the creation of a draft business plan for the start-up company detailing the proposed growth strategy, pricing model, and sales structure.

This role will be for an initial period of 9 months. The project is designed to progress from an academic research programme into a commercial spin-out company and offers a unique pathway from a deep tech research environment to an entrepreneurial pathway. Once the spin-out company is established, the intention is that the successful candidate may have an opportunity to transition into a key role within the company, leaving the university post to continue their work as a Co-Founder in the new venture.

Responsibilities
  • Customer discovery: Engage with prospective customers, Key Opinion Leaders and end users, and engage new ones through marketing, trade shows, company visits and online channels, with the goal to refine and verify the User Requirements Specification of the proposed veterinary care product, and build a portfolio of potential early adopters for this new technology solution.
  • Customer development: Based on the User Requirements Specification established, develop a pricing model and projections on required volumes and potential revenues for Years 1-3, based on initial sales from international customers.
  • Business planning: Develop an investor ready Business Plan and engage with potential investors to secure sufficient investment to enable the spin-out company to be formed.
  • Support the formation of the start-up company.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system, applicable legal and other requirements for spin-out companies from University College Cork.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  • Perform additional duties as reasonably required within the scope and level of the role.

Essential Criteria
  • An MBA with extensive experience (>5 years) in commercialisation.
  • Experience working in a management position in a spin-out company or spin-out environment.
  • Experience in managing teams.
  • Demonstrated experience of working with biosensor R&D teams to establish new technology solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience of engagement and market validation activities with potential customers for veterinary or healthtech solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Track record of working on own initiative.

Desirable Criteria
  • Experience of working with or collaborations involving electrochemical sensors.
  • Experience in scoping out opportunities in veterinary/healthcare markets.

Appointment may be made on the  Grade 5 Admin (B) € 51,307- € 55,116 per annum.  Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.

Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Paul Galvin.
Closing date of applications is 1 pm, 7th October 2025.
