Postdoctoral Researcher in Capillary Electrophoresis for soil nutrient analysis
Contract :
Full Time/Fixed Term

Tyndall National Institute is a research flagship of University College Cork and an internationally recognised European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) encompassing materials, devices, circuits and systems. As Ireland’s largest Research and Technology Organisation (RTO), Tyndall works with global industry and academia to transform research into products in its core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-tech and the environment. Tyndall is home to a research community of 600 people of over 50 nationalities.

Tyndall has an Athena Swan Bronze award, reflecting our commitment to ensuring equity of opportunity for all researchers regardless of gender or ethnicity. We are actively improving our internal processes to build on the Athena Swan award and have a vibrant People and Culture team driving initiatives. Tyndall has an active EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) group which delivers initiatives to enhance EDI within the institution.

Within Tyndall’s Micro Nano Systems Centre we have created a strategic research cluster entitled “Sustainable Agri-Food and the Environment” (SAFE) to target development of key problem statements within Agri-Food production. The Precision Electrochemical Nanosensors Group develops state of the art nanosensors with one research thrust focusing on soil health and real time detection of nutrients in soil.

Tyndall recently was awarded the Horizon Europe project “E-SPF digit” to develop novel sensors for real time detection of macro-nutrients in soil.  Detection of these “in Operando” is difficult and requires a new type of easy-to-use sensor that can be deployed in the field.

The position is approximately for two years with potential for extension pending further funding. Working closely with precision electrochemical nanosensor researchers, the candidate will develop a capillary electrophoresis system (CE) which will be integrated with sensors existing within the group.

Purpose of the role
The work will involve the (i) development of state-of-the-art research methods that involve CE design, development and fabrication (in collaboration with the nano-fabrication facility at Tyndall) and (ii) development of Analogue Front Ends (AFE) to power the devices and subsequent integration of all complements.  These CE system will be designed to integrate with nanosensor chips existing within the group. It is expected that the combination of CE coupled with nano-electrochemical sensor devices will exhibit superior sensitivity and selectivity compare to the state of the art.

MNS plays a leading role in the Science Foundation Ireland / Department of Agriculture Food and the VistaMilk Centre along with other EU consortiums which involves close collaboration with industry as well as national and international academic research groups.
